GCT 03: Youth-Led Climate Action & Environmental Education Initiative

Overview
GCT 03 is a climate-focused pilot project under Global Community Transformation (GCT), designed to equip young people in Norway and across the GCT International network with tools, knowledge, and platforms to address the urgent challenges of environmental degradation and climate change. This initiative aims to foster environmental responsibility, cross-cultural collaboration, and sustainable innovation by placing youth at the center of global green efforts.
Vision
To build a generation of youth leaders who are climate-conscious, action-oriented, and committed to ecological sustainability across local and global contexts.
Core Objectives
- Environmental Education: Deliver interdisciplinary workshops and campaigns focused on climate literacy, environmental justice, and the science of sustainability.
- Youth Engagement: Mobilize school and community-based youth groups in Norway and Africa to lead local green initiatives.
- Innovation & Action: Support youth-led environmental projects including waste management, green entrepreneurship, and climate advocacy.
- International Exchange: Facilitate dialogue and collaboration between Norwegian and African youth through intercultural forums and joint campaigns.
Activities & Components
- School & Community Workshops: Climate education activities hosted in collaboration with schools, youth centers, and local councils.
- Eco-Actions: Clean-up drives, tree planting, and zero-waste initiatives led by youth groups.
- Green Innovation Labs: Incubators for climate-smart solutions in areas such as renewable energy, agriculture, and eco-tourism.
- Intercultural Exchange: Norway–Africa youth summits focused on environmental diplomacy and indigenous knowledge systems.
- Leadership Training: Equipping young change agents with advocacy, policy, and communication skills on climate and sustainability.
Target Groups
- Norwegian and African youth (ages 15–30)
- Educators, schools, and environmental clubs
- Local government partners and municipal youth departments
- NGOs and institutions working in climate, education, or innovation
Pilot Locations
- Norway (initial outreach in Gjøvik, Oslo, and surrounding regions)
- Uganda, Kenya, and selected GCT partner countries in East , central and West Africa
Strategic Relevance
GCT 03 aligns with Norway’s environmental priorities, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (particularly SDG 13 – Climate Action), and global efforts to localize climate resilience. The project also bridges environmental education and intercultural dialogue, making it both a sustainability and peacebuilding effort.
